What is 5-Amino-1MQ?
5-Amino-1MQ is a small quaternary quinolinium compound, not a peptide, that inhibits the enzyme nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT). A 2018 mouse study reported effects on diet induced obesity, and later mouse work examined aged muscle stem cells. All published evidence is preclinical, and it is not an approved drug.
- Synonyms
- 5-Amino-1-methylquinolinium; NNMT inhibitor 5-amino-1MQ
- Classification
- Small molecule inhibitor of nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (not a peptide)
What is 5-Amino-1MQ?
5-Amino-1MQ was identified in a structure guided search for selective, membrane permeable NNMT inhibitors.
Research context
Studies examine fat tissue metabolism in diet induced obese mice, combination with calorie restriction, and regenerative capacity of aged muscle.
Mechanisms being investigated
- Inhibition of NNMT, an enzyme that methylates nicotinamide and is linked to NAD+ and methyl donor balance.
Research status
Approval status: Not approved for human use. Highest evidence tier in the cited literature: preclinical.
Preclinical. Not approved for any use; no published human trials.
Established findings
- NNMT inhibition in enzyme and cell assays.
Preliminary or experimental findings
- Metabolic and muscle findings from mice.
