What is Ipamorelin?
Ipamorelin is a synthetic pentapeptide that activates the ghrelin receptor and was described in 1998 as the first selective growth hormone secretagogue, meaning it raised growth hormone in animal models without the cortisol and prolactin rises seen with earlier compounds. Human data are limited to early pharmacology studies. It is not FDA approved.
- Synonyms
- NNC 26-0161
- Classification
- Synthetic pentapeptide growth hormone secretagogue (ghrelin receptor agonist)
What is Ipamorelin?
Ipamorelin was developed by Novo Nordisk as part of the growth hormone releasing peptide family.
Research context
Studies examined growth hormone release selectivity in animals, bone growth in rats and pharmacokinetics in volunteers.
Mechanisms being investigated
- Agonism at the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHS-R1a), the ghrelin receptor.
Research status
Approval status: Not approved for human use. Highest evidence tier in the cited literature: preclinical and early human.
Not approved by the FDA for any use. Published human data are limited to early pharmacology studies.
Established findings
- Selective GHS-R1a agonism described in animal pharmacology.
- Human pharmacokinetic modeling was published in 1999.
Preliminary or experimental findings
- Effects outside acute growth hormone release.
- Long term safety.

Testing considerations
- Contains non natural residues (Aib, D-2-Nal, D-Phe); stereochemistry is not resolved by intact mass alone.
General methods are explained in purity versus identity testing.
What is still unknown
- Human outcomes beyond pharmacology studies.
