What is Sermorelin?
Sermorelin is the 29 residue amino terminal fragment of growth hormone releasing hormone, the shortest sequence with full activity. It was once FDA approved as Geref for diagnosing and treating growth hormone deficiency in children, but that product was discontinued in the United States. Research grade sermorelin is not an approved drug.
- Synonyms
- GRF(1-29)NH2; Geref (former drug product)
- Classification
- Synthetic peptide equal to the first 29 residues of GHRH
What is Sermorelin?
Sermorelin reproduces GHRH(1-29) with a C terminal amide. It is the parent sequence for later analogs such as CJC-1295.
Research context
Clinical literature covers pediatric growth hormone deficiency diagnosis and treatment, and later discussion of adult growth hormone insufficiency.
Mechanisms being investigated
- GHRH receptor activation in the pituitary, preserving feedback regulation of growth hormone.
Research status
Approval status: Previously approved, discontinued. Highest evidence tier in the cited literature: clinical trials.
Previously FDA approved (Geref); the product was discontinued and is no longer marketed. No current approved research use.
Established findings
- Its activity at the GHRH receptor and historical approved diagnostic use.
Preliminary or experimental findings
- Adult uses discussed in reviews, which were not established by trials leading to approval.

Testing considerations
- Methionine at position 27 is prone to oxidation; check the impurity profile for oxidized forms.
General methods are explained in purity versus identity testing.
What is still unknown
- Current clinical relevance given discontinuation.
